The Ka-Bar Dog's Head Utility Knife (1317) of American production is a refreshed version of the legendary Ka-Bar USMC 1217 knife, created for the needs of the United States Navy during World War II. An aggressive blade, secured with a double-sided crossguard, embedded in a buffalo leather handle, finished with a massive steel pommel.
The Dog's Head knife (1317) from Ka-Bar has a plain edge Clip Point-shaped blade with a flat cut, made of one piece of high-quality 1095 Cro-Van carbon steel with an admixture of chrome and vanadium, 4.3 millimeters thick. The blade has a small ricasso over the crossguard, which has embossed Ka-Bar markings and the Dog's Head Pirate logo. The blade of the knife also has a wide, shallow, double-sided fuller and a false cutting edge on the back at the top of the blade. In order to eliminate light reflections and protect the steel against external factors, the blade was covered with black powder paint.
The handle of the Dog's Head knife is made of pressed together discs of buffalo leather. It has a double-sided steel guard, more prominent on the front side, protecting the hand from slipping onto the blade, and a solid steel head that can be used as an improvised hammer. The handle head has been additionally enriched with a hole for a wrist safety lanyard, which provides excellent protection against losing the knife during intensive work. The above-mentioned head detail and the reduced prominence of the dorsal crossguard are the main features that distinguish the Dog's Head knife from the legendary original.
The knife comes with an elegant sheath made of real buffalo leather, designed to carry the knife on a belt in a vertical position. The scabbard is decorated with an embossed Dog's Head Pirate logo. It is equipped with a loop holding the handle, fastened with a steel latch. The scabbard was made in Mexico.
