SAFETY BRIEF: SAFE SHOOTING ON THE SRT STEEL RINGER TARGETS

Static reactive steel targets, like e.g. SRT ringer gongs, are outstanding as shooting training tool and make wonderful plinker targets as well. They’re lots of fun to shoot at, but because of their nature (a steel plate disintegrating and deflecting rounds fired at it) you need to observe the certain safety rules listed below to avoid injuries. The manufacturer is not to be held responsible for any damage resulting from improper use of targets.

  1. Keep the safe distance from the target – at least 10 meters (30 feet) for pistol ammunition, or 100 meters (300 feet) for rifle and intermediate rounds.
  2. Never engage steel targets at an angle! The impact surface should always be set at right angle to the bore axis.
  3. Never fire steel-cored ammunition on steel reactive targets! Using mild-steel-cored (MSC) or armor-piercing, armor-piercing-incendiary or armor-piercing-incendiary-tracer ammunition (AP, API, APIT) you would permanently damage the target and may cause dangerous ricochets. Same goes for mere tracer or incendiary ammunition, without steel penetrators.
  4. If impact side is visibly damaged, uneven or cracked (e.g. from using the wrong kind of ammunition), turn it to the other side and continue using – or if damage is critical, stop using and replace the target.
  5. While shooting at steel targets ALWAYS wear proper shooter protecting glasses and earmuffs. Make sure any person around you is likewise protected. Wear long-sleeves and trousers if possible to protect against spalling.
  6. Never shoot at the steel ringer target with: steel BBs or shotgun shot; air gun pellets; shotgun slugs.
  7. The impact velocity should not exceed 800 mps (2600 fps). If you are not sure as to what your ammunition terminal velocity is at the distance, use manufacturer references, ammunition manufacturer ballistic tables, or use chronograph and ballistic calculator to check what’s the minimum distance for your weapon and ammunition.
  8. The impact velocity should not be less than 230 mps (755 fps). Above that level the fragmentation of the bullet is assured, while at lower velocity the bullet might bounce and ricochet.
  9. Always set your targets at a soft surface, capable to absorb and decelerate spalling and fragments. If you have to shoot on the frozen or rocky ground, set the target onto a wooden panel sized at least 2x2 m (79x79 inch), or a bed of railway sleepers or other anti-ricochet padding. Otherwise double the safe distance to protect from ricochets.
  10. Only use steel targets indoors, if floor, walls and ceiling are covered with anti-ricochet padding. Spalling-absorbing screens are recommended to be set around the target placed so. Steel targets are NOT recommended to be used indoors, as spalling and fragments tend to damage the surrounding surfaces. Setting steel targets in an indoor shooting range, remember that fragments of the disintegrating bullets may and would damage other targets or screens nearby.
  11. Remember that after the shooting ALL parts of the target and stand are contaminated with lead. Only handle them in gloves, and wash hands immediately to avoid eyes and skin irritation.
  12. Remember to tidy-up the shooting range after you shoot. Also – if possible – try to wipe sand from the target stand before packing it into the transfer bag.
