Helikon Squall Hardshell Jacket is a membrane rainproof jacket that offers effective protection against rain and snow. The difference between a softshell jacket like the Blizzard jacket and a hardshell jacket is fundamental. The softshell jacket provides protection against light wind and drizzle, mainly thanks to the densely woven nylon fabric with DWR treatment, while the hardshell uses a membrane that provides much greater waterproofing while maintaining good breathability. The Helikon Squall jacket combines these two features.
The Helikon Squall jacket has been designed with flexibility of use in mind. It can be worn as a standalone jacket in the spring and as an outer layer for winter expeditions, allowing you to put an additional warming layer underneath, for example the Wolfhound Hoodie jacket. The jacket has three practical pockets, two of which are located at chest height so as not to interfere with the chest strap of the backpack. The third pocket is located inside the jacket and is designed to store documents or a phone. The Squall jacket can also be packed into its own hood, taking up little space, which is very practical when traveling.
The properties of the membrane in the Helikon Squall jacket are based on the TorrentStretch technology, which is a three-layer laminate developed by Helikon-Tex specialists. Between the durable outer layer and the integrated lining there is a membrane with micropores that block water from entering the jacket, while allowing moisture (in the form of water vapor) generated by the body to be effectively transported to the outside. Helikon Squall hardshell jacket is characterized by a very high water resistance of 30,000 mm of water column and breathability, which in the case of the TorrentStretch laminate is 30,000 g/m2/24h. Another important parameter is the evaporation resistance coefficient RET, which determines the permeability of water vapor through the membrane. The lower the RET factor, the better the breathability of the jacket. The Helikon Squall hardshell has a RET value below 5, which proves very good breathability.
Additional protection against moisture is provided by taped seams, an adjustable hood with a high collar and waterproof YKK® AquaGuard® zippers. The main two way zipper is secured at the bottom with a Prym snap. The Squall jacket has also been treated with a water-repellent DWR coating that does not contain harmful PFC (perfluorocarbon) substances.
Additional ventilation is provided by underarm vents. They are especially useful during greater exertion, providing better ventilation and body temperature regulation. Adjustable Velcro cuffs and drawstrings in the hood and lower part of the jacket allow you to adjust the jacket to individual preferences and weather conditions.
