5.11 Tactical – From a Passion for Climbing to a Worldwide Recognizable Brand

The history of 5.11 Tactical, an American company, is closely tied to a couple of climbing pioneers in Yosemite – Liz and Royal Robbins. Conquering (often for the first time) exceptionally difficult peaks in the 1960s, they noticed a lack of suitable clothing that wouldn't restrict movement or hinder climbing and would offer proper durability. Eventually, Royal Robbins decided to design and create pants based on his extensive traveling experiences. Thus, it should not surprise anyone that the very genesis of the name 5.11 comes from a difficulty level in American rock climbing in Yosemite (YDS).

The Birth of 5.11 Tactical Pants

Initially, the 5.11 pants, sewn exclusively for friends, proved to be so good that they soon had to hit a broader market. Additionally, the American services, specifically the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), whose agents (often keen climbers in their spare time) considered them to be the best pants for fieldwork. The product offered not only excellent functionality and durability but also, importantly, did not flaunt a military style, meeting the requirements of the now-popular "low-profile". To this day, they are probably the most famous model of "tactical" pants, which in an unchanged form (under the name 5.11 Tactical Pant) we can find in the company's offer. Looking at the design details, we can even notice original "climbing" solutions. One of them is the characteristic tape sewn at the back, on the right side, which initially served for fastening "quickdraws" when setting up stations, and today is used by services for additional stabilization of the weapon carried under clothing.

Such significant success of the company virtually immediately after its establishment inevitably led to the expansion of its product range. Equally well-known elements of "tactical" clothing associated with 5.11 are their famous shirts, essentially setting standards for low-profile clothing. This is what characterizes a large part of the company's products – these are items that will work excellently in work (including services or security), all kinds of tactical activities, but also in tourism, or just every day.

5.11 Clothing and Equipment - Tested in the Toughest Conditions

Speaking of 5.11 products, it is impossible not to mention the ways in which they design and test their products. The company's management is fully aware that one cannot be an expert in everything and is keen to consult or even co-create new products with former and current operators of special units, martial arts or shooting specialists, in a word, experts in their fields. Thanks to this, we can be sure that every element is in the right place and is not just a clever marketing ploy, and subsequent solutions have their use in real operations. It is not surprising, then, that 5.11 products are recommended by the American NTOA (National Tactical Officers Association) and are willingly used by services worldwide.
